Board of Trustee Meeting Information

Hayes Township Residents,

During the July 13 Board of Trustees meeting, the Board discussed the current invoice from the Charlevoix Fire Department in the amount of $109,300. This represents a significant increase from last year’s cost of around $76,000, and the projected contract amount for next year is $125,000.

Like many public services, the cost of fire protection, equipment, personnel, and operational resources has continued to rise. In previous years, the annual fire protection contract could be accommodated within the Township’s regular operating budget. However, the current and projected costs place a substantial demand on Township finances.

To address these increasing expenses while maintaining essential fire protection services, the Board is preparing ballot language for consideration by voters in the November election.

A Special Meeting has been scheduled for Monday, July 27, at 7:00 p.m. to review and discuss the proposed ballot language for a Fire Protection Millage. At the July 13 meeting, the Trustees discussed proposing a 0.5-mill levy for a period of three years. If approved by voters, the revenue generated from this millage would be dedicated exclusively to funding the Township’s fire protection contract. Establishing a dedicated millage would provide a transparent funding source for these essential public safety services and allow residents to clearly understand the cost of fire protection.

The Board will continue its discussion and consider the proposed ballot language at the July 27 Special Meeting. Residents are encouraged to attend and share their thoughts.
